Fuck Right Off
We subscribe to Netflix and all we ever got was a portal to endless content (quality not necessary), a new verb to assimilate our anti-social tendencies with, and a public service announcement from famous actors warning us to “take care of ourselves.”
When we enroll ourselves in a new concept, product, service, or belief, we are declaring to the world what we value. When we enroll in Netflix we are saying yes (and I am not exempt here) to 24/7 content with no off button other than our self determined will. For some this is this crack, and to others this is no more than a steal as it comes at a cost of $10. For the capable off-button-clickers of the world, endless content at such a minute cost is indeed miraculous.
But when we say yes to these once impossible bundles of dopamine hits, we are simultaneously attuning ourselves to demand immeasurable quantity at a destructively low cost.
What if I asked you to weigh the value of a monthly $10 Netflix subscription to a customizable monthly box of essential oils capable of addressing upwards of 80% of your common health concerns for $100/month? You would shudder at the latter and say: "a $100 box of highly distilled nice smelling plants in bottles so small that even airport security would allow on a plane? Fuck. Right. Off."
You would right.
But you would also be answering from a place of unconscious incompetence (the first stage of learning).
I would then reply, but is it really finite?
Or is there more value than immediately meets the eye? Say you get a box of four 15 mL bottles: OnGuard, Peppermint, Lavender, and Deep Blue. You would have the resources to healthily and confidently remedy over 40 common daily woes (see comments for a list). Not to mention the ability to add some drops to baking soda and vinegar for a plethora of household cleaning items (hint: you don’t need a different cleaner for every surface/room– that’s a marketing grab we’ve unconsciously subscribed to most of our capitalist lives).
Sure, this isn’t every movie and season of every show you have loved, will love, and don't even know is possible to love, available all day everyday short of an electricity crippling Solar flare. But is it something that will empower you to answer more of the questions, problems, and challenges that are thrown at you every single day?
This box may be finite in quantity, but the number of times it can empower you, those you know, and every hand that touched it before yours, sure aren’t.
